North Hunterdon-Voorhees Board of Education: Selective Prohibition on Discussing Ethics Complaints
Cases
Case Overview
The North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional High School Board of Education restricted public commenters from discussing ethics complaints at its meetings, and it enforced the ban selectively. Citing confidentiality, the board twice prevented a commenter from discussing his own complaint, which he would otherwise remain free to discuss in any other public setting. Yet at one of those meetings, the board allowed a different speaker to criticize his complaint.
On June 11, 2026, FIRE wrote board members a letter explaining that the restrictions infringe upon public commenters’ First Amendment rights.
