Case Overview

On November 12, 2025, during a Wellness 101 event attended by nearly all the college’s fraternity and sorority members, administrators asked students to anonymously answer questions on their phones. One question asked, “What’s keeping you from better organizing or maintaining your finances?” to which one student responded: “Jews.” On December 1, Lafayette suspended all Greek Life social activities until the groups complete educational programming. FIRE wrote Lafayette on December 22, calling on the college to rescind this guilt-by-association punishment imposed for student expression protected by the college’s free speech policies. Lafayette responded on February 26, 2026, claiming its actions comported with its discrimination and harassment policies. FIRE wrote again on March 9, explaining that punishing all Greek Life students—including those who allegedly complained about the expression—is retaliation for protected speech.
