Emory University: Law School Expels Student for Use of Racial Slurs in Private Emails
Cases
Emory University
Case Overview
On April 22, 2026, Emory University dismissed first-year law student Milano Wayne for harassment based on six emails he sent to faculty members and one student in which he used racial slurs and other racially-charged language to explain his political development and philosophy. FIRE wrote Emory on May 14 urging it to reinstate Wayne because the mere use of slurs and other racially-charged language in a private email, when the language is not directed at any person based on their race, does not meet the standard for discriminatory harassment.
