Calais, Maine: Ordinance Bans 'Abusive' and 'Profane' Language in City Parks

Calais, Maine, maintains an ordinance prohibiting “abusive” and “profane” language in city parks. On its face, the ordinance applies to both spoken and written language.

On June 30, 2026, FIRE sent a letter to Calais’ mayor and city council members explaining that the First Amendment protects such language and urging them to repeal the ordinance.
