Washington State School Directors’ Association: Model 'Staff Expressions' Policy

The Washington State School Directors’ Association advises hundreds of school districts statewide, including by providing model policies. WSSDA’s model “Staff Expressions” policy includes imprecise and ambiguous wording that could chill school employees’ protected expression throughout the state. On March 2, FIRE wrote WSSDA, encouraging the association to adopt revisions to the policy to provide more clarity and align it more closely with constitutional standards.
