Case Overview

Citing the anti-ICE messaging of artist Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez’s Ni de Aquí, Ni de Allá, University of North Texas cancelled its exhibition on Feb. 11, 2026 — just days after its Feb. 3 opening, and months before its scheduled May 3 end date. UNT officials privately admitted to having concerns that the artwork could lead Texas lawmakers to target their funding. UNT also allegedly warned faculty and staff not to publicly discuss the cancellation and further suggested it may similarly restrict student art with political messages moving forward. On March 4, FIRE wrote UNT, urging it to publicly explain the process behind the Quiñonez cancellation and make a clear recommitment to free speech, academic freedom, and artistic expression on its campus, including by refraining from retaliation against faculty for criticizing government decisions.
