St. Croix Central School District: Unconstitutional Restrictions on Public Comments

Cases

Case Overview

At a June 2025 meeting, the St. Croix Central School Board in Hammond, Wisconsin, announced restrictions on speakers wishing to address the board during public comment periods. The board warned speakers they could not make complaints or allegations against students or employees, use language or gestures the board deems “profane,” “harassing,” or “abusive,” or engage in “personal attacks.”

On May 21, 2026, FIRE wrote to the board, calling on them to rescind these unconstitutional restrictions or confirm they no longer reflect board policy and will not be enforced moving forward.
