Greene Select Board: Prohibitions on "embarrassing" comments, attacks, complaints, and allegations
Cases
Case Overview
At the July 13, 2026, Select Board meeting in Greene, Maine, the board chair read aloud the rules governing public comment periods. Those rules included prohibitions on comments that have “the effect of embarrassing or attacking the character of any individual or board member” and on complaints and allegations “concerning any staff member or any person connected to the Town of Greene.”
On October 6, FIRE wrote the Select Board, explaining that its rules infringe on speakers’ constitutional rights and calling on the board to bring its rules into compliance with the First Amendment.
