Community College of Aurora: Administrators gag student newspaper from gathering news

Cases

Case Overview

On March 13, 2026, student journalist Andy Green founded FoxTalk, an independent Colorado-focused newsroom at the Community College of Aurora. Administrators ordered the paper to stop publishing until the college approved a number of protocols governing risk management and organizational structure. FoxTalk staff, asserting their First Amendment rights, continued newsgathering and publishing. On July 23, the college charged FoxTalk and Green with failing to comply with a lawful order. On August 6, FIRE wrote the college, explaining that it could not review or restrict FoxTalk’s publishing, punish students for engaging in protected speech, or restrict students’ associational freedoms.
