FIRE demands university restore posters decrying political violence, reform speech-chilling policy

On September 11, 2025, Campbell University law student Justin Booker hung flyers featuring  a picture of Charlie and Erika Kirk with their two children overlaid with “END POLITICAL VIOLENCE” in several common locations throughout the law school.  Assistant Dean Regina Chavis tore down these flyers, alleging they violated university policy restricting flyers to a single bulletin board. Other flyers dealing with political content were allowed to remain in these areas, suggesting viewpoint discrimination. On March 3, 2026, FIRE wrote Campbell, demanding it end its selective enforcement and revise its flyering policy to provide clear, viewpoint-neutral guidance. We argued that Campbell’s current policy — which allows administrators to remove postings for any reason — allowed the censoring of Booker’s flyer and violated the school’s free speech promises.
