Tell the government: Hands off our TV stations

Your local TV stations are at risk.

Not from advertisers or ratings — but from Washington.

The Federal Communications Commission is demanding early license renewals from stations years ahead of the normal schedule.

  • ABC7 New York
  • ABC7 Los Angeles
  • ABC 7 Chicago
  • 6abc Philadelphia
  • ABC7 Bay Area
  • ABC13 Houston
  • ABC30 Fresno
  • ABC11 Raleigh-Durham

These stations are more than just television channels. They’re where families turn for weather alerts, breaking news, school closings, election results, and the stories that matter most in our communities.

So why are they suddenly being singled out?

You might’ve noticed that every one of those stations is owned by ABC, which has been under fire from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr. The FCC is sending a not-so-subtle reminder to stations that the government is looking over their shoulder and is going to decide whether they get to stay on the air.

That's un-American and it's not the law.

At the same time, the FCC is trying to control which guests can appear on The View — an ABC program — by threatening to apply equal time requirements for political candidates. Such requirements threaten the freedom of liberal-leaning TV shows and conservative talk radio programs alike to pick which guests to invite on the air.

These pressure tactics are totally out of step with a truly free nation. In America, we each get to decide what to watch and when to change the channel — not the government.

The American people don’t need Brendan Carr to appoint himself as the nation’s speech police. Whether the FCC is targeting The View, conservative talk radio, or your local TV station, the danger is the same: When the government exerts power over editorial decisions, broadcasters are pressured to follow only the government-approved narratives. Viewers have less choice, see fewer perspectives, and hear fewer voices.
