University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: University Condemns and Investigates Student Groups for Satirical Content

On April 1, 2026, The Daily Tar Heel, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s editorially and financially independent student newspaper, published satirical articles concerning immigration, DEI, and other current events. On April 6, a separate registered student organization and late-night variety show, Hill After Hours, released a TikTok sketch satirizing a stereotypical white student walking through an area of campus where predominantly students of color have historically lived. That same day,  Senior Vice Provost James Orr released a statement on behalf of the university condemning the satirical works, stating “[a]ny content that demeans, harms or contributes to an unwelcoming environment in our campus community is completely unacceptable.” Orr also stated the university was investigating the TikTok sketch to determine more information and next steps to address concerns. On April 9, FIRE wrote UNC-Chapel Hill reminding it not only of its First Amendment obligations not to punish speech that others find offensive, but of its state law obligation of institutional neutrality.
