Case Overview

Amid sweeping censorship in Texas, Tarleton State University informed Professor Aaron George that he must remove two readings from his course on American political history or be reassigned to teach a different class. The two objectionable readings were Carl Wittman’s article, “A Gay Manifesto,” and Kevin Kruse’s book, “White Flight: Atlanta and the Making of Modern Conservatism.” George acquiesced, and after a subsequent anonymous complaint about an unknown issue with another one of his course syllabi, he removed a reference to “LGBT Americans” for administrative approval. FIRE wrote Tarleton State on March 5, urging the university to refrain from interference in faculty courses.
