Duke University: SJP Suspended for Posting 1970 Political Cartoon to Instagram
Cases
Duke University
Case Overview
On March 13, 2026, Duke’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter posted a flyer to Instagram promoting an upcoming event. The flyer featured a 1970 political cartoon depicting the United States and Israel as pigs, and multiple students filed complaints about the “antisemitic imagery.” In response, Student Affairs ordered SJP to take down the post, suspended the group pending an investigation, and froze its funding. FIRE wrote Duke on April 28, urging it to reinstate SJP and restore its funding because the cartoon is political speech protected by Duke’s free expression policies.
