SEM was founded in Missoula, MT in 1977 as a nonprofit research and educational organization. Our mission is to:
perform basic and applied research;
develop research and management tools;
publish supporting documentation and user guides; and
provide technical transfer services through publications, workshops, conferences, and the web
within the domains of
wildland fire planning, occurrence, and behavior;
wildland fuel assessment and treatment;
fire weather and climate analysis; and
fire effects, fire ecology, and Fire Regime Condition Class.
While
the results of our work are freely available to all via scientific
publications, informal papers, and public domain simulation and
analytical software, our target clientele is the community of
professional fire and land managers and planners.
