About SEM PDF Print E-mail

SEM was founded in Missoula, MT in 1977 as a nonprofit research and educational organization. Our mission is to:

  • perform basic and applied research;
  • develop research and management tools;
  • publish supporting documentation and user guides; and
  • provide technical transfer services through publications, workshops, conferences, and the web

within the domains of

  • wildland fire planning, occurrence, and behavior;
  • wildland fuel assessment and treatment;
  • fire weather and climate analysis; and
  • fire effects, fire ecology, and Fire Regime Condition Class.
While the results of our work are freely available to all via scientific publications, informal papers, and public domain simulation and analytical software, our target clientele is the community of professional fire and land managers and planners.
